Rihanna’s ‘Man Down’ Is Her Answer To Bob Marley Classic

Rihann "Loud"

The encounter begins simply enough. A handsome guy walks into a dank club and makes a beeline for the pretty girl with waist-length, red locks who’s dancing by herself. He moves gently, showing only a hint of force when he grabs her wrists and pins them against the wall. But it’s what happens afterward in Rihanna’s new “Man Down” video that has had critics decrying the clip since it debuted last week.

Does the world still care about the Red Hot Chili Peppers?

Red Hot Chili Peppers

There’s a lot riding on the return of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Like the future of rock. Guitars were almost entirely absent from the charts last year, with country band Lady Antebellum and folk group Mumford & Sons being the only guitar based groups to give the digital kids a run for their money (well, what little money is actually changing hands in this download era). Lady Gaga and Adele currently rule the pop charts, and (as I reported last week) trends are moving strongly in favour of female pop artists.

But this summer, a few rock heavyweights return to the fray, and we will find out if we are witnessing the end of the rock era, or just another blip on the pop cycle.

The Beyoncé groove

Beyonce 4

I don’t dance. It’s a language I don’t understand. It’s Swahili. It’s pollen. I am allergic to the dance – when I listen to music, I like to sing along and occasionally raise my head, like a dog enjoying the wind through a car window. I’m a still person, content when stretched flat on a banquette. I don’t dance, can’t dance and won’t dance. There is, however, one artist whose songs always make my legs twitch. And my arms. And slightly my nostrils.

Foo Fighters’ ‘Walk’ Video: ‘Falling Down’ All Over Again

Foo Fighters Walk

The Foo Fighters’ new “Walk” video is, rather oddly enough, a near re-creation of the 1993 film “Falling Down,” the oft-disturbing portrait of the prototypical “angry white male” (as portrayed by Michael Douglas, complete with crew cut and short-sleeved work shirt) who is pushed to the brink by what he views as society’s decay — immigrants, crime, greed, bureaucracy, the fact that McDonald’s stops serving breakfast at 10:30 a.m. — and goes on a violent rampage as a result, culminating in a stand-off with police and his death. Only, you know, funny.

Country singer Aldean welcomes more guests to his ‘Party’

Jason Aldean "My Kinda Party"

Country star Jason Aldean’s platinum-selling fourth album is called “My Kinda Party.’’ Thanks to a smash duet with Kelly Clarkson on the ballad “Don’t You Wanna Stay’’ — which recently topped the Billboard country singles chart for three weeks — and its follow-up, the current top 20 hit, “Dirt Road Anthem’’ — a rapped-sung ode to country living — it looks like Aldean will have to welcome a whole slew of new party guests.
